How can physiotherapy help as we get older?

 As we get older we start to realise that physical activity just isn't as easy as it used to be - but why is that exactly? Our bodies will go through the natural ageing process and physical changes include decreased muscle strength, reduced bone density and a higher body fat percentage. This combined with stiffer joints and reduced coordination can have a detrimental effect to the older persons balance and mobility leading to an increase to their risk of falls.

 

Around one in three adults over 65 who live at home will have at least one fall a year, and about half of these will have more frequent falls. Thankfully most falls don't result in serious injury, but can really affect someone's confidence and lead to reduced independence.

 

 How can I prevent falls?

* Strength and balance training

* Arrange items in your home to prevent excessive reaching or       bending

* Book a sight test if you are concerned about vision

* Wear well-fitting shoes that provide support around the ankle

* Get help with things that you can't do safely on your own

 

We would all love a magic wand to stop the inevitable ageing process, and we are yet to find it. However, physiotherapists can work with older people to help them remain active and maintain their independence for as long as possible. Physiotherapy can not stop the ageing process, but it has been shown to improve various physical factors such as joint range, strength, balance, exercise tolerance and pain. Consequently, it can help older adults maintain their function, general health/wellbeing and independence.

 

 

 

An initial physiotherapy assessment involves discussing your history and needs. They would then assess physical elements such as your range of movement, strength and mobility. Together you would create specific goals you would like to achieve allowing them to create a bespoke programme for you. This may include stretching, strengthening and balance exercises, as well as practising functional activities such as walking, stairs etc. They can also provide equipment such as walking aids and advice on preventing falls.
